Boundaries are not a personality change

You don't have to become cold to become clear.

Most of the boundary advice I see online is written by people who have never had to keep a relationship, a job, and a reputation intact at the same time. Just say no. Just cut them off. Just leave. Okay — and then what?

For a lot of us, boundaries aren't a matter of courage. They're a matter of arithmetic. There is a real cost to being the woman who suddenly stops absorbing, and pretending that cost doesn't exist isn't empowerment, it's bad math.

“A boundary isn't a wall. It's a door you're finally allowed to answer.

So here's what I've landed on: a boundary is information, not punishment. It tells people how to reach you, not that they can't. The moment I stopped delivering boundaries like a verdict and started delivering them like a schedule, most of the fear went out of it.

The people who wanted access adjusted. The people who wanted unlimited access got quiet. Both of those were useful.
